“Parks are a critical part of Detroit serving as a hub for outdoor recreation, a family hangout spot for cookouts and reunions, or simply just a spot to take in nature and relax. Parks and recreation are very important for people of all ages, however youth ages 25 and under are an important demographic we need more of throughout Detroit’s parks. It's so important to maintain that presence through youth involvement, which is essential to our beloved city's growth. In this new day and age, parks connect to every aspect of life whether it is social justice, public health, artistic moments, environmental engineering, or something entirely different
This year, through the Youth Ambassador Program, we are quite excited to work closely with several local city parks and city youth to continue nurturing this relationship. Each ambassador will be given 1:1 support, autonomy, and resources to develop an event centered around the theme of their term. We absolutely can't wait to show our love and support for the parks through these YA led events. A favorite aspect of ours through this program is the opportunity to continue building skills in stewardship, communications and leadership. No matter how old you get, there's always still room to grow, much like the green parks of our great city.
Being outside, socializing with our Detroit community is another one of our favorite aspects of this program. If you haven't made it one of your New Year's resolutions yet, it's not too late to add it. Even during the colder months, it can make a big difference stepping outside; breathing in the crisp air; and staying bundled up in warm clothing. The best part? You can do it by yourself or with anyone you may know. Bring your friend down to a park to view the scenery, enjoy the amenities, or even just sit for the sake of being outside. There's so much to do, just make that first step and we'll see you in the parks!”
Best regards,
DPC YA Co-leads
